Treatment plants produce large quantities of sludge.

In the municipal sewage treatment plants in Sweden are formed each year about 220 000 tons of dewatered sludge which about half of which is organic material. The sludge is nutritious and contains a total of 5000-6000 tons of phosphorus and 8000-9000 tonnes of nitrogen. Phosphorus is also a limited natural resource, and from a environmental -perspective and for resource management, it is important to utilize the sludge content of nutrients by agricultural replace mineral fertilizer with phosphorus from the sludge.

In addition to nutrients, there are also metals and organic substances in the sludge. The organic compounds have partly originated products and materials used both in households and in industries.

 

A comprehensive certification for sludge in work for water treatment plants have begun, with the connection with the Parliamentary targets for nutrient recycling of phosphorus in wastewater .The purpose of certification is to plant nutrients from the sludge to be acceptable from an environmental and health perspective.

38 wastewater treatment plants have been certified by REVAQ, according to the latest annual report from Swedish Water .

 

Sludge is a big problem across Europe and rest of the world. The sludge continues to go to landfills or to the cement industry, while there is no access to proven technology and knowledge of how to interpret all the regulations that exist today. Sweden with a few other countries are still far ahead in order to process and develop qualified products that have a large benefits in terms of sustainable agriculture.

 

In addition, there is a demand for bioenergy in Europe where the treated sludge can be a new valuable commodity. . In addition, do not leave the pellet of sludge few CO2 emissions from combustion.

Small-scale biogas plants

Anaerobic digestion (AD) for biogas production is a proven technology that is well known in the municipal waste and wastewater treatment plants. It is commercially ready to use and has multiple benefits (energy savings, waste management cost savings, reduction of environmental impact, reduction of carbon footprint, etc.). The same technology can be applied to other organic waste such as agro-food waste. The motivation behind BIOGAS3 is based on the observation that, despite its multiple benefits, AD is not yet widely implemented in the agro-food sector, or its implementation varies extremely between the EU-27 member states. The small-scale AD concept (<100 kW), applied soundly in the appropriate locations, is a sustainable solution from the economic (energy savings due to self-consumption, waste management savings), energy (self-consumption and reduced losses due to near use) and environmental (reduced or zero transport costs for raw materials and digestate, CO2 emission abatement) point of view.
